Kano Governor Abba Yusuf Defends Nomination of Murtala Sule Garo as Deputy Governor

By Oluwadara Akingbohungbe

KANO, NIGERIA – Nigeria’s Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, stated on Tuesday that the nomination of Murtala Sule Garo as Deputy Governor was based on his competence and commitment to state development.

Okay News reports that Mustapha Muhammad, the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, released a statement confirming the governor made the disclosure while opening the 39th Executive Council Meeting at Government House, Kano.

“We tried as much as possible to select someone who can provide matching contributions toward the development of the state,” Yusuf said.

The governor transmitted Garo‘s name to the Kano State House of Assembly last week following the resignation of the former Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo.

“So many names of people were presented, but we have to look into their past performances, look at their competency, and look at what they did to the state before and what they can contribute today; Murtala Sule Garo is a seasoned politician who can give his own contribution,” Yusuf said.

The governor commended the assembly and its Speaker, Jibril Ismail Falgore, for the speedy confirmation of the nominee.

During the meeting, Yusuf congratulated the newly appointed Head of Service, Bilkisu Shehu Maimota, and received 39 excellence awards, including a cash gift of ₦30,000 ($23.00) from a primary school teacher.
