KANO, Nigeria — Kano State generated N102 billion (approximately $68 million) in internally generated revenue in 2025, a sharp increase from the N74 billion recorded in 2024, the Kano Internal Revenue Service (KIRS) said on Sunday.

Okay News reports that KIRS Chairman Dr Zaid Abubakar disclosed the figures at the agency’s Annual Dinner and Awards Night in Kano, attributing the growth to institutional reforms, stronger compliance systems, and deeper collaboration with stakeholders.

“The service is targeting N200 billion IGR on attainment of full institutional autonomy,” Abubakar said, signalling a near doubling of the state’s revenue ambitions in 2026.

The agency has reduced its Area Tax Offices from 28 to 12 centralised Revenue Service Centres to improve oversight and efficiency. It also recruited 100 additional staff and introduced a N2,000 Annual Development Levy, with half the proceeds retained at the community level for grassroots development.

Kano had earlier projected an annual IGR of over N80 billion for 2025, later revising the target to more than N100 billion as reforms deepened. For 2026, the state is aiming for N200 billion, backed by the proposed Kano State Revenue Administration Law and integration with federal tax systems.
