KANO, Nigeria: Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State, located in northern Nigeria, has publicly dismissed a viral political slogan claiming he will only serve a single term in office. The governor clarified his future political ambitions while addressing a group of supporters in a recently circulated video, detailing his realignment from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The political landscape in Kano State experienced a major shift when Governor Yusuf recently defected to the APC. He left the NNPP following a severe political conflict with his former political ally, Rabiu Kwankwaso. Before making his official exit, the governor submitted his resignation, pointing to what he called “deepening internal crises” and “prolonged leadership disputes.”
While speaking to the gathered crowd, Governor Yusuf responded directly to a popular Hausa chant translating to “One term,” which critics had directed at his administration. He acknowledged the phrase but attached it strictly to his previous political affiliation.
“Actually, it is only one term in the NNPP party. We will do the second term in the APC,” the governor stated.
Okay News reports that the governor also took the opportunity to criticize opposition factions during his address, specifically targeting politicians aligning with the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
“As for the ADC party that they have returned to, it will not even do one term, not ever,” he added.
Governor Yusuf defended his decision to change political parties, insisting the transition was necessary for the region’s development. Upon announcing his defection, he stated the move was taken “in the best interest of the people of Kano state.”
The governor’s declarations were confirmed on Sunday, April 5, 2026, around 12:00 PM West African Time (WAT, GMT+1), signaling a highly competitive political climate as the state prepares for future election cycles.
