The Katsina State Government has ordered the immediate closure of all public schools as security threats surge across Nigeria’s North-West, Okay News reports.
The directive, issued on Friday by the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, triggered a swift evacuation of students from boarding facilities. Videos circulating online showed pupils carrying bags and mattresses as they hurried out of school premises shortly after the announcement.
Although the state has yet to release an official statement, Yusuf Jibia, Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, confirmed the shutdown in an interview with DW Hausa, describing it as a necessary precaution.
“Only examinations remain for our students. We have to act now to prevent any possible attacks,” he said.
Katsina has been on high alert following a fresh wave of coordinated assaults on educational institutions across the region. The state shares a border with Kebbi, where gunmen abducted 26 female students from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, earlier this week.
