Birnin-Kebbi, NIGERIA – The Kebbi State Government has officially announced the passing of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Muhammad Usman Ankwai (also known as Muhammad Usman Zuru).

Okay News gathered that the Speaker died on Monday evening, April 6, 2026, in a hospital in Cairo, Egypt, where he had been receiving treatment for a prolonged illness. He was 56 years old.

In a condolence message released on Tuesday, Governor Nasir Idris described the death as a “tragic and monumental loss” to the state and the nation. The Governor lauded the late Speaker as a “trusted ally” and a “stabilizing force” in the state legislature whose commitment to duty and unity left a lasting impression on the people of Kebbi.

“The death of Rt. Hon. Muhammad Usman Ankwai has created a painful vacuum in the leadership of the state,” Governor Idris stated. He extended his heartfelt sympathies to the Speaker’s family, the Zuru Emirate, and the members of the House of Assembly, praying for Allah to grant the deceased Aljannatul Firdaus and give the family the strength to bear the loss.
