Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, commissioned a remodelled domestic terminal at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport and announced further upgrades to the airport.
The terminal was named the Muhammadu Adamu Dankabo Domestic Terminal in honour of a Kano aviation pioneer.
Keyamo said Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu had approved ₦46 billion, approximately $33.7 million at the July 28 exchange rate, for the resurfacing and reconstruction of the airport’s second runway.
Okay News reports that the federal government has also started upgrading the airport’s Hajj terminal, with contractors already working at the site.
“The Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport remains the commercial heartbeat of Northern Nigeria. Kano, for us, remains the commercial heartbeat of Northern Nigeria. That is why we have earmarked Kano for major upgrades,” Keyamo said.
He added: “The president has approved the sum of N46 billion for the resurfacing and reconstruction of the second runway so that the Kano Airport can compete with other international airports around the world,”
Keyamo said the projects were intended to improve the airport’s capacity and infrastructure for domestic, international and pilgrimage travel.
“We have also begun the upgrade of the Hajj Terminal. That project is ongoing, and contractors are already on site as we speak,” he said.
Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Olubunmi Kuku and the authority’s board chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, attended the commissioning.
The Kano work follows other federal airport projects. Okay News reported that the reconstruction of Lagos’ international airport terminal had begun, prompting a travel advisory from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria.
Keyamo said the Kano runway reconstruction and Hajj terminal work would proceed alongside the newly commissioned domestic terminal.
