Venerable Edwin Achi, the Priest-in-Charge of Ebenezer Anglican Church, Ungwan Maijero, in Kaduna State, has died in the custody of armed kidnappers, the Anglican Diocese of Kaduna has confirmed.

Achi was abducted on October 28, 2025, alongside his wife and daughter after gunmen invaded their residence in Nissi community, located in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna in northwestern Nigeria. The family had reportedly just moved into the community when the attackers struck.

Okay News reports that shortly after the abduction, the kidnappers contacted the family and demanded ₦600 million for their release. Achi, who hailed from Umuaja in Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta State, remained in captivity until his death was confirmed by the church.

In a statement announcing the tragic development, the Diocese wrote:

“With heavy hearts and deep sorrow, the Diocese of Kaduna, Anglican Communion, announces the passing unto glory of The Venerable Edwin Achi, Priest-in-Charge of Ebenezer Anglican Church, Ungwan Maijero. Ven. Edwin Achi, who was kidnapped alongside his wife on 28th October, 2025, has been confirmed dead.”

The Diocese described his death as a painful loss to the entire Anglican community and to countless people who had benefited from his service and ministry.

As of Thursday, Achi’s wife and daughter remain in captivity.

The kidnappers have reportedly refused to adjust their ransom demand despite the priest’s death, heightening fears for the safety of the remaining hostages.
