The Kogi State chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Moses Peter Oricha, has issued a public alert, urging the general public, security agencies, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to disregard a purported party congress scheduled for later this week. Oricha alleges that this congress is being organized by individuals with no legitimate standing within the party, aiming to destabilize the SDP’s growing influence.

This warning comes at a critical juncture for the SDP, particularly following the recent high-profile membership of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai. El-Rufai’s arrival has fueled speculation that the SDP is emerging as a viable platform for a unified opposition, especially given the internal challenges plaguing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party.

In a strongly worded statement released on Tuesday, Oricha described the individuals planning the congress as “ghost members” and “political impostors.” He asserted that the scheduled congress, slated for March 12, 2025, in Kogi State, is illegal and has no authorization from the official SDP leadership.
“These individuals are attempting to hijack the party’s structure for their own selfish interests,” Oricha stated. “They are not recognized members of the SDP, and their actions are a blatant attempt to undermine the party’s progress and unity. We will not allow them to disrupt the legitimate processes of our party.”

Oricha further emphasized that the SDP in Kogi State remains united under his leadership and is committed to upholding the party’s constitution and electoral guidelines. He called upon security agencies to investigate the activities of these individuals and prevent any unlawful gathering that could lead to a breach of peace.
“We urge INEC to be vigilant and ensure that only legitimate party activities are recognized,” Oricha added. “The SDP in Kogi State is focused on building a strong and credible platform for the upcoming elections, and we will not be distracted by these acts of sabotage.”
The timing of this alleged unauthorized congress has raised concerns about potential internal divisions within the SDP, especially as the party seeks to consolidate its position as a leading opposition force. Political analysts suggest that such internal conflicts could weaken the SDP’s chances of making significant gains in future elections.

The SDP’s growing prominence has also attracted attention from other political parties, with some speculating that the alleged congress could be a ploy orchestrated by rival factions to sow discord within the party. Oricha, however, reiterated that the SDP remains resolute and will take all necessary measures to protect its integrity.
