KANO, Nigeria — Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano State, is set to formally defect from the New Nigeria Peoples Party to the African Democratic Congress on Monday, in a move that could reshape political alignments ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
Okay News reports that the planned defection will be marked by an official registration ceremony in Kano, where Kwankwaso is expected to be joined by several members of the NNPP, signalling a broader shift within his political base.
The development follows a recent visit by Rauf Aregbesola, the national secretary of the ADC, who met with Kwankwaso at his Abuja residence. While Kwankwaso confirmed the meeting on his social media page, he did not disclose details of their discussions, further fuelling speculation about his next political move.
Momentum around the anticipated defection intensified over the weekend during the annual Kwankwasiyya Eid festival in Kano, where supporters openly chanted the name of Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, in Kwankwaso’s presence. Both leaders acknowledged the crowd and delivered brief remarks at the gathering.
