ABUJA, Nigeria — Former Kano State Governor and ex-Minister of Defence, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has raised alarm over the worsening security situation across Nigeria, saying the country is facing an alarming surge in banditry, terrorism, kidnappings and other violent crimes.
Kwankwaso said communities in states including Zamfara, Borno, Sokoto, Katsina, Kwara and Oyo are increasingly living in fear as attacks continue to spread. He described the situation as unacceptable, noting that some criminal groups have become so emboldened that they now use social media to openly taunt authorities and intimidate citizens.
Okay News reports that the former presidential candidate argued that Nigeria’s security crisis is not beyond resolution, insisting that the country possesses the resources needed to address the challenge. According to him, what is lacking is the political will and commitment required to confront the problem decisively.
He said the current strategy has failed to produce the desired results despite significant government spending on security, warning that continued violence is claiming lives, displacing families and placing further strain on the nation’s economy.
Kwankwaso called for an urgent overhaul of Nigeria’s security architecture, including improved welfare for security personnel, stronger intelligence gathering and expanded community policing initiatives. He also urged authorities to address the underlying drivers of insecurity such as poverty, unemployment and poor governance.
Beyond security reforms, he stressed the need for greater investment in education, healthcare, infrastructure, electricity and agriculture, arguing that sustainable development and job creation are essential to restoring stability and strengthening the country’s long-term security.
