Okay News reports that the Kwara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has not reached any decision regarding the zoning of its governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party’s chairman, Sunday Fagbemi, disclosed this during a radio programme monitored in Ilorin on Friday night amid growing calls for power rotation to the Kwara North Senatorial District.

Fagbemi clarified that no formal discussion or resolution has been made on the issue, stressing that such matters fall under the authority of the APC’s national leadership.

“If there will be any zoning, the national executive of the party will give the directive. But as of now, nothing of such is on the offing,” Fagbemi said. “We have not even discussed it because we don’t have the schedule decided yet. Anyone who has interest to vie for any position has the right to do so.”

He further explained that even if the Kwara State chapter reaches a decision on zoning, it must still be ratified by the national secretariat.
“Even if we decide in Kwara that this is what we want, it is still subject to approval from the national secretariat,” he emphasized.

Fagbemi’s clarification comes amid renewed agitation from stakeholders and political leaders in Kwara North, who have continued to push for the governorship ticket to be ceded to their zone — which has not produced a governor since Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999.

The zoning debate has increasingly dominated political discussions in the state as the ruling APC prepares for another electoral cycle.

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq is currently serving his second and final term, which is set to end constitutionally in 2027.

Observers believe political activity will intensify in the coming months as succession discussions, zoning considerations, and candidate positioning shape the road to the next governorship election.
