Ilorin, NIGERIA – The Kwara State Government has filed a 20-count criminal charge against former Senate President Bukola Saraki and former Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed over their alleged involvement in the 2018 Offa bank robbery.
The case profile, made available to Okay News was marked KWS/114C/26, was instituted following a ruling by the Court of Appeal which upheld the conviction of several suspects linked to the robbery. Among them is Ayo Akinnibosun, who reportedly confessed during trial to being a “hitman” connected to Saraki’s political structure.
The charges against Saraki, Ahmed, and others include serious offences such as culpable homicide and criminal conspiracy. They are scheduled to be arraigned before Justice Haleemah Salman of the Kwara State High Court on June 4.
Okay News reports that the development has reignited controversy surrounding the deadly Offa robbery, which shocked the country in April 2018 and led to multiple deaths and widespread outrage.
Reacting to the charges, Saraki has dismissed the case as politically motivated, accusing the state government of attempting to damage his reputation by linking him to the crime.
During the original investigation, security agencies reportedly recovered vehicles and other exhibits allegedly connected to the robbery from the Kwara State Government House and a state ministry. These items were later presented in court and formed part of the evidence used in securing convictions against the suspects.
Although Saraki has denied any relationship with Akinnibosun, reports indicate that both individuals were seen together in photographs taken at a family event, further fueling public debate over the case.
With the arraignment date approaching, the case is expected to attract significant national attention, given the high-profile individuals involved and the gravity of the allegations.
