Abdulrahman AbdulRasaq, Governor of Kwara State, has approved a new minimum wage of N70,000 for civil servants in the state. The announcement was made in a statement by Hauwa Nuru, the state’s Commissioner for Finance, on Saturday. The new wage structure is set to take effect starting in October 2024.

The decision was reached following a successful tripartite meeting involving representatives of the state government, the leadership of organized labour—including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC)—as well as representatives from the organized private sector.

Nuru described the wage increase as a significant step in enhancing the welfare of civil servants in the state.

“This decision, which includes consequential adjustments to the relevant salary structures, was made after a successful tripartite meeting,” Nuru said in the statement.

She praised Governor AbdulRasaq for his proactive approach and for granting autonomy to the minimum wage committee, allowing swift implementation of the new pay package.

The governor’s commitment to improving the welfare of civil servants was further highlighted, with the wage increment expected to benefit workers across all 16 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the state.

Nuru also commended the collaboration between the government and labour unions, which facilitated the approval of the new minimum wage.
