Labour Unions Declare Nationwide Strike Over Minimum Wage

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have announced a nationwide indefinite strike beginning June 3, 2024, over the Federal Government’s failure to increase the minimum wage to N60,000 and reverse the recent hike in electricity tariff.

The labour unions declared the strike after a meeting with the government ended in deadlock, with the government refusing to budge from its proposed N60,000 minimum wage. The unions had demanded a minimum wage of N494,000.

The strike is expected to paralyze economic activities across the country, with the unions calling on all their affiliates, civil society organizations, market men and women, and the general public to join the action.

The labour unions have accused the government of showing disdain and lack of commitment to the welfare of Nigerian workers, despite repeated calls and ultimatums. They vowed to continue the strike until their demands are met.
