The Lagos State Government has announced a 25% fare reduction for commuters using the Blue Line Rail during off-peak hours, a measure set to take effect on August 12, 2024.

The discounted fare will be available between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM daily, providing relief to passengers who travel outside of peak times.

This announcement was made by the Managing Director of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Engr. Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, via a statement on LAMATA’s official X handle on Saturday.

In addition to the fare reduction, Engr. Akinajo revealed that the travel time between Marina and Mile 2 will be significantly reduced to just 18 minutes, down from the previous 25 minutes.

This improvement is part of an overall enhancement of the Blue Line service, aimed at increasing efficiency and convenience for Lagos commuters.

“The Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue Line will from Monday, 12th August 2024 upscale the number of trips from 54 to 72 per day. The current schedule for Sunday operations will remain unchanged,” Akinajo said in the statement.

“This means a train will now be available every 18 minutes in both directions, allowing commuters to plan their journeys more efficiently.”

The increase in daily trips and the reduced travel time are expected to alleviate congestion and make the service more attractive to a broader range of users.

Furthermore, LAMATA emphasized that the new measures, including the off-peak fare discount, are designed to encourage greater use of the service during less busy hours and reduce overall transportation costs for Lagos residents.

The updated train schedules, reflecting the increased frequency and shortened travel times, will be available on the LAMATA website, at train stations, and across LAMATA’s social media platforms.

Since the commencement of passenger operations on the Blue Line metro rail on September 4, 2023, nearly two million passengers have been transported, underscoring the growing popularity and importance of the service in the city’s public transportation network.
