The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has condemned the planned protest by activist Omoyele Sowore calling for the release of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
In a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Seye Oladejo, the party described Sowore’s planned action as a publicity stunt aimed at drawing attention rather than promoting justice.
Oladejo said it was “baffling and laughable” that Sowore, who has no cultural or political connection to the Southeast, would present himself as a spokesperson for the Igbo community. “It is a sheer mockery and insult to a people of intellect, courage, and history for him to imagine he can speak for or lead Ndigbo,” he stated.
He questioned Sowore’s motives, asking why he was “weeping more than the bereaved” over a matter currently before the court. “Is this about justice, or merely another desperate audition for public relevance?” he asked.
The APC spokesman accused Sowore of hypocrisy, saying that while he frequently speaks of democracy and rule of law, he undermines both by mobilising protests over a case pending before the judiciary. “This contradiction exposes his activism as noisy, shallow, and opportunistic,” Oladejo added.
He maintained that the Southeast has capable leaders who understand their challenges and do not need an “outsider in borrowed robes” to define their struggles.
Oladejo urged Nigerians to disregard the planned protest, stressing that legal matters must not be tried on the streets. “The rule of law must take its full course, as that is the only path to lasting justice and national order,” he said.
He reaffirmed the APC-led government’s commitment to upholding due process and national stability under President Bola Tinubu.
