The Lagos State Government has commenced compensation payments to residents of Oworonshoki in Kosofe Local Council whose properties were demolished during recent urban renewal operations.
The disbursement, led by the Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency (LASURA), began on October 23 at the palace of the community’s traditional ruler. Officials from LASURA, the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), and civil society groups were present.
According to LASURA Director General Oladimeji Animashaun, 80 verified beneficiaries received compensation between Thursday and Friday. He emphasised that the payments fulfilled a promise made by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Animashaun clarified that the area had been designated a regeneration zone over five years ago, dismissing claims that residents were not notified before the demolitions. He stated that due process was followed throughout the clearance operation.
Compensation amounts varied by property type, ranging from N3 million to N5 million. Lower sums were allocated for makeshift structures such as kiosks and shanties. Animashaun noted that payments were fair and well-received by residents.
He added that the regeneration plan aims to transform Oworonshoki into a modern, well-planned community with improved infrastructure and living conditions.
Okanlawon Sanni, a Lagos State House of Assembly member representing Kosofe Constituency I, described the compensation as a demonstration of the government’s commitment to humane urban renewal.
Sanni urged residents to remain calm and cooperative, assuring them that the redevelopment was in the public interest. He highlighted plans for better housing, drainage, potable water, and road access in the area.
Two beneficiaries, Chioma Idoko and Taiwo Solola, expressed appreciation for the compensation, each receiving N200,000. They acknowledged the gesture as a step in the right direction.
The initiative is part of the Sanwo-Olu administration’s broader urban regeneration strategy aimed at replacing unsafe settlements with sustainable communities.
