LAGOS, Nigeria: The Lagos State Government commended residents on Saturday, April 25, 2026, for their participation in the first full edition of the state’s reinstated monthly environmental sanitation exercise.
Okay News reports that Nigeria’s Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, posted a statement on the social media platform X praising the turnout. “Our deepest appreciation goes out to every single Lagosian who stepped out today to take ownership of our common heritage,” Wahab said.
The exercise took place between 6:30 am and 8:30 am WAT, marking the full resumption of a programme suspended in November 2016 following a court ruling. Wahab credited Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat for restoring the practice. “I must specially commend the entire State Executive Council led by our boss, Mr Governor, Jide Sanwoolu and the Deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, whose administration stood firm in ensuring that this process comes to reality,” he said.
Enforcement was conducted by a joint team comprising the Ministry of Environment, the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, the Kick Against Indiscipline unit, the Lagos Waste Management Authority, and local sanitation officers. The government stated defaulters face sanctions under the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017.
Authorities previously held a symbolic launch along the Mushin-Agege Motor Road on March 14, 2026. To encourage ongoing participation across the state’s 20 local government areas and 37 local council development areas, the government announced plans to implement a monthly reward system for the cleanest council, development area, and street.
