Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has cancelled the 2025 edition of the Greater Lagos Fiesta, an annual New Year’s Eve celebration traditionally held across the state.
Okay News reports that the decision, announced on Tuesday, replaces the event—scheduled for December 31, 2025—with a call for residents to dedicate time to personal prayers.
Governor Sanwo-Olu directed Lagosians to pray for the nation, the state, and its people, specifically seeking continued prosperity, effective leadership, peace, productivity, and general wellbeing.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, the governor expressed optimism about the coming year.
He described 2026 as holding great promise for both Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital, and the country at large.
Sanwo-Olu urged residents to maintain peace and harmony in their communities.
The Greater Lagos Fiesta, known for countdown events featuring music, entertainment, and fireworks in multiple locations, has been a highlight of the state’s cultural calendar.
On behalf of his family, the governor extended New Year wishes to all residents.
He assured that his administration remains committed to working harder to deliver improved governance and development outcomes.
The cancellation reflects a shift toward spiritual reflection amid the transition into the new year.
