The government of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has issued an urgent warning about the potential collapse of a building at Mopol 20 Barracks in the Onigbongbo area of Ikeja, Lagos State, Okay.ng reports.
The warning comes as the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) prepares to begin a crisis evacuation of the old Block 3 section of the barracks. According to a press release issued on Wednesday by Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, Acting Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, a response team evaluated certain areas of the building and determined that it was in a dangerous state.
Oke-Osanyintolu emphasized the need for immediate action to prevent potential fatalities or property damage.
“The Agency dispatched a response team to the location, and the findings indicate that the building and those adjacent must be evacuated with immediate effect,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated. “We are conducting a response plan which comprises an assessment, safe and orderly evacuation, and controlled demolition.”
The LASEMA official confirmed that under the leadership of Governor Sanwo-Olu, the agency would carry out a preemptive demolition of the building to mitigate the risk of collapse and avoid secondary incidents.
He also urged residents to remain calm and avoid spreading misinformation on social media, assuring them that the situation is under careful monitoring and control.
This development comes after Olumuyiwa Adejobi, spokesperson for the Nigerian Police Force, revealed in July that certain police stations in Lagos were undergoing refurbishment. He noted that the refurbishment was being carried out in collaboration with the state government.
