The Lagos State Government in the Federal Republic of Nigeria has begun a new statewide campaign offering free Human Immunodeficiency Virus testing to residents across all Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas, as part of activities leading to the global commemoration of the 2025 World AIDS Day.

Okay News reports that the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency, popularly known as LSACA, confirmed that the screening exercise will run from 18 November to 1 December 2025, with teams of counsellor–testers stationed in communities to attend to residents. The agency said the initiative is structured to expand access to testing and ensure that more people in the state know their Human Immunodeficiency Virus status early enough to seek care if required.

In a statement shared on its official X platform, the agency explained that it has deployed trained personnel, test kits, condoms, and information materials to various communities to encourage participation and deepen awareness around prevention, treatment, and stigma reduction.

LSACA’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr Folakemi Animashaun, emphasised the crucial role early testing plays in achieving improved health outcomes, particularly in a densely populated state such as Lagos, one of Africa’s largest economic hubs.

“As we approach the 2025 World AIDS Day, our priority is to ensure that every resident of Lagos has the opportunity to know their Human Immunodeficiency Virus status in a safe, confidential, and accessible manner,” she said. “Testing remains the gateway to prevention and treatment, and this statewide exercise underscores our commitment to safeguarding the health and well-being of all Lagosians.”

She noted that LSACA is collaborating with international development partners, civil society organisations, and grassroots groups to reach communities that often face barriers to health services. Animashaun encouraged residents living in rural, riverine, and hard-to-reach areas to take advantage of the designated screening points.

Reaffirming the commitment of the Lagos State Government, the agency maintained that it continues to expand testing and counselling centres while strengthening public education to reduce new infections. It urged residents to utilise the free Human Immunodeficiency Virus screening opportunity as part of efforts to secure an HIV-free future for the state.

LSACA serves as the coordinating body responsible for implementing Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome response programmes across Lagos State, working with both government and non-governmental bodies.
