A tanker explosion on the popular Otedola bridge in Lagos State has sparked a major fire outbreak, sending panic through residents and motorists, who immediately fled the scene for safety.

The incident occurred Tuesday evening after a fuel tanker lost control, overturned, and quickly burst into flames, according to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

In an official statement posted on its X (formerly Twitter) page, LASTMA confirmed that the flames rapidly spread, affecting nearby structures, including a church, a residential building, and several mechanics’ parks situated at Otedola Under Bridge, near CMD Road.

“Fire Rescue teams are currently at the scene, working to extinguish the fire and mitigate the situation,” LASTMA stated.

The agency also noted that recovery operations were underway, but warned motorists and residents that traffic had been halted completely, causing severe congestion around the area.

“Recovery efforts are ongoing. Due to the incident, there is currently no movement in or out of Otedola Under Bridge, resulting in a complete blockade of the area,” the statement read.
