The Lagos State Government has taken a significant step towards realising the long-awaited Lekki-Epe International Airport, signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the internationally renowned construction company, Summa Group. This pivotal agreement, announced by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu via his official social media channels, marks a crucial milestone in a project that promises to transform Lagos’s transportation landscape and propel the state’s economic growth to new heights.

“We signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the internationally acclaimed construction company, Summa Group, to develop and construct the much-awaited Lekki-Epe International Airport,” Governor Sanwo-Olu stated. “This groundbreaking initiative is an essential part of our vision to improve connectivity in Lagos, stimulate economic growth, and draw in global investments.”

The Lekki-Epe International Airport has been a cornerstone of Lagos State’s development agenda for years, envisioned as a key driver of economic activity within the rapidly expanding Lekki-Epe corridor, one of the state’s four major growth areas. The project has faced numerous hurdles, including funding challenges and shifting partnerships.

Initially, the Federal Government granted approval for the airport’s construction in 2022, signalling a crucial step forward. However, the path to realisation has been marked by exploration and reassessment. Earlier this year, the state government considered partnering with the Portuguese firm Mota-Engil Consortium for the project’s execution. This recent shift towards Summa Group underscores the government’s commitment to finding the most suitable and capable partner to bring this ambitious vision to fruition.

The economic implications of this project extend far beyond improved air travel connectivity. The airport is expected to serve as a catalyst for significant economic growth, attracting both domestic and international investment. It will not only create numerous job opportunities in the aviation sector but also stimulate the development of supporting industries such as tourism, hospitality, logistics, and real estate.

Furthermore, the airport’s construction aligns perfectly with the Lagos State Government’s broader infrastructure development plan. The 2025 budget allocates a substantial portion to critical infrastructure projects, including the construction of the Lekki-Epe (Orisa) Bridge and its approach road, as well as the Lekki-Epe Airport Road. These vital road infrastructure projects will significantly enhance accessibility to the new airport and the surrounding economic hubs, ensuring seamless connectivity and facilitating the smooth flow of goods and people.

The Lekki-Epe International Airport represents not just an airport but a symbol of progress and a testament to Lagos State’s ambition to become a global economic powerhouse. This partnership with Summa Group marks a crucial turning point, bringing the dream of a modern, world-class airport in Lagos one step closer to reality.
