Linda Yaccarino has stepped down as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of X, the social media platform owned by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk.

Yaccarino, who took the helm in June 2023, announced her resignation on Wednesday in a post via the platform, thanking Musk for the opportunity to lead the company through a period of transformation.

“When @elonmusk and I first spoke of his vision for X, I knew it would be the opportunity of a lifetime to carry out the extraordinary mission of this company,” she wrote.

“I’m immensely grateful to him for entrusting me with the responsibility of protecting free speech, turning the company around, and transforming X into the Everything App.”

Yaccarino did not disclose the reason for her departure or whether she would be assuming a new role elsewhere.

During her tenure, Yaccarino oversaw the introduction of key features aimed at reshaping the platform, including Community Notes, a crowdsourced fact-checking tool designed to combat misinformation, and the announcement of X Money, an upcoming digital payment service intended to broaden the platform’s utility beyond social interaction.

Her exit comes just months after Elon Musk integrated X into his artificial intelligence venture, xAI, signaling a strategic convergence of his tech ventures.

Before joining X, Yaccarino was a top advertising executive at NBCUniversal and previously served on a U.S. presidential council on sports and nutrition.

Musk, who remains Chairman of X and CEO of xAI, has yet to announce a successor.
