The Los Angeles County coroner on Thursday confirmed the death of Linkin Park singer Chester Bannister.

His body was found this morning in a private residence in Los Angeles and is believed to have hung himself.

Mike Shinoda, who also provided vocals for the band, confirmed the news on Twitter and wrote: “Shocked and heartbroken, but it’s true. An official statement will come out as soon as we have one.”

Linkin Park gave the world many a song and hit including the collaboration with Jay Z and their latest single, Heavy, that was focused on depression.

Bennington has struggled with alcohol and drug problems throughout his life.

He died on the birthday of Chris Cornell, Soundgarden singer and a very close friend of his who also committed suicide a few months ago.

Chester is survived by his wife, Talinda Ann Bentley, and six children – Jamie, 21, Isaiah, 19, Draven, 15, Tyler Lee, 11, and Lily and Lila, 7.

He was aged 41.
