Liverpool began the new calendar year with a frustrating goalless draw against Leeds United at Anfield on Wednesday evening. Despite entering the match with hopes of building on a late December resurgence, the Reds struggled to break down a disciplined Leeds defense in a game characterized by limited offensive creativity and a slow tempo.

The first half saw Liverpool control much of the possession, with Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz showing flashes of individual promise.

Okay News reports that the home side failed to convert their territorial advantage into significant scoring opportunities, though Ekitike was notably denied a penalty claim after a challenge in the box 15 minutes into the match.

As the game progressed into the second half, the introduction of substitutes Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo failed to provide the necessary spark to break the deadlock. Leeds United nearly secured an unexpected victory in the closing stages, but their late effort was chalked off due to a narrow offside.

The final whistle confirmed a stalemate, leaving Liverpool to reflect on a missed opportunity to start the year with maximum points.
