Liverpool’s struggles continued on Wednesday night as they were held to a 1-1 draw by an impressive Sunderland side at Anfield—rescued only by a late own goal from Nordi Mukiele.

Sunderland took a deserved lead in the 67th minute when Chemsdine Talbi unleashed a long-range effort that deflected off Virgil van Dijk and wrong-footed Alisson. The goal capped a fearless performance from the visitors, who had already struck the woodwork twice and looked the more dangerous side for large stretches.

Liverpool, flat for much of the contest, finally clawed their way back in the 81st minute. Florian Wirtz weaved into the box and released a mishit shot that was drifting wide until Mukiele diverted it into his own net, bringing the Reds level.

The visitors nearly stole all three points deep into stoppage time when Wilson Isidor rounded Alisson, only for Federico Chiesa to race back and clear the ball off the line in dramatic fashion.

Despite their late pressure, Liverpool never truly hit their stride, with their attack lacking rhythm and cohesion. Even Mohamed Salah’s introduction after halftime couldn’t fully unlock Sunderland’s disciplined defence.

The result marks the champions’ third straight failure to win at Anfield—a worrying sign for Arne Slot’s team, who now sit eighth in the Premier League table.

Sunderland, meanwhile, continue their impressive season run, showing the grit and confidence of a side refusing to be intimidated by big grounds or big names. They head to Manchester City next, carrying momentum and belief.

Liverpool travel to Leeds United on Saturday, seeking answers to their recent slump.
