London’s flagship FTSE 100 index has shattered records, surging past 10,000 points for the first time in history on the opening trading day of 2026.
Okay News reports that in early deals on Friday, the benchmark index—home to giants like energy firm BP, telecoms player Vodafone, and banking powerhouse HSBC—climbed 1.0 per cent to an all-time peak of 10,033.75 points.
The breakthrough extends a stellar run from 2025, when the FTSE 100 soared more than 21 per cent—its strongest annual gain in 16 years.
The rally was fuelled by interest rate cuts from the Bank of England and the US Federal Reserve as global inflation cooled.
Leading the charge on Friday was gold miner Fresnillo, whose shares skyrocketed 436 per cent in 2025 amid record-high gold prices.
Global stock markets enjoyed a banner year in 2025, hitting repeated all-time highs and delivering double-digit returns across major indices.
The FTSE 100’s milestone underscores renewed investor optimism in the UK economy at the dawn of 2026.
