‘Luck Helped Me Become Successful’ – Tony Elumelu Says

By Adamu Abubakar Isa

LAGOS, Nigeria — Chairman of Heirs Holdings and founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, Tony Elumelu, has shared insights into the principles that have shaped his entrepreneurial journey, describing success as a combination of hard work, preparation and luck.

Okay News reports that Elumelu made the remarks during an interview with content creator Korty EO at the 2026 Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF) entrepreneurship selection event, where he discussed his personal philosophy, business empire and vision for empowering young African entrepreneurs.

According to him, while talent, intelligence and determination are important, success often requires an element of luck. He described himself as a beneficiary of fortunate opportunities but stressed that luck only becomes meaningful when individuals are prepared to seize it through discipline, competence and consistent execution.

“I am a product of luck,” Elumelu said, adding that many capable people miss opportunities not because they lack ability, but because they are not adequately positioned when those opportunities arise.

The billionaire investor explained that one of the central goals of the Tony Elumelu Foundation is to reduce the role of chance in determining success by creating structured opportunities for young Africans. Through the foundation, selected entrepreneurs receive business training, mentorship and $5,000 in non-refundable seed capital to help launch or expand their ventures.

Elumelu noted that entrepreneurship remains one of the most effective tools for addressing unemployment, poverty and economic exclusion across the continent. He argued that empowering young people to build businesses creates a multiplier effect that generates jobs, stimulates economic growth and strengthens communities.

Speaking on his business philosophy, Elumelu reiterated his long-standing advocacy for Africapitalism, a concept that encourages the private sector to drive Africa’s development through strategic, long-term investments that deliver both financial returns and social impact.

He also highlighted the breadth of the business ecosystem under his leadership, which spans financial services, energy, technology, healthcare, hospitality, real estate and investment management. These include the United Bank for Africa (UBA), United Capital, Heirs Holdings, Transcorp, Heirs Energies, Heirs Technologies, RedTech, Avon Healthcare and other affiliated companies.

Reflecting on his career, Elumelu pointed to his rise from managing a bank branch at a relatively young age to leading several pan-African institutions as evidence that resilience, strategic thinking and effective execution remain critical ingredients for success.

He emphasized that while ideas are important, execution ultimately separates successful entrepreneurs from those who fail to achieve their goals. According to him, the ability to consistently deliver results and transform vision into action remains one of the most valuable skills in business.

The Tony Elumelu Foundation, established in 2010, has supported thousands of entrepreneurs across Africa and remains one of the continent’s largest private-sector initiatives focused on entrepreneurship development and economic empowerment.
