Luka Modrić, the Croatian midfield maestro, has announced he will leave Real Madrid following the upcoming Club World Cup this summer.

The 39-year-old veteran shared the news on Thursday via Instagram, marking the end of an illustrious chapter at the Santiago Bernabeu.

“Everything in life has a start and an end, on Saturday I will play my last match at the Santiago Bernabeu,” Modrić stated. “I’m leaving with a full heart, filled with pride, gratitude and unforgettable memories. And even though, after the Club World Cup, I’m no longer going to wear this shirt on the pitch, I will always be a Madrid fan.”

Since arriving from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012 for around €35 million ($40 million), Modrić has become a cornerstone of Los Blancos, appearing in nearly 600 matches. His trophy cabinet boasts six UEFA Champions League titles and four La Liga championships, among numerous other honors.

Despite a challenging start, Modrić quickly adapted and evolved into one of the world’s finest midfielders, earning the prestigious Ballon d’Or in 2018. That year, he also led Croatia to a historic World Cup final, where they finished as runners-up.

Reflecting on his time at Madrid, Modrić added, “Throughout these years I’ve experienced incredible moments, comebacks that seemed impossible, finals, celebrations and magical nights at the Bernabeu. We won it all and I was very happy. Very, very happy.”

As Real Madrid prepares for the Club World Cup, the club and fans alike will bid farewell to a true legend whose legacy will endure long after his final whistle.
