Okija, Anambra State, NIGERIA — William Fubara, a 100-level student of Madonna University, Okija campus, has reportedly died following complications from alleged repeated bullying and physical assault by fellow students.
The incident, which came to light on Thursday, has sparked outrage across social media and within the university community.
According to accounts shared by peers, Fubara was allegedly targeted over several months due to his perceived “effeminate mannerisms.”
Okay News reports that these allegations include claims of intimidation and invasive phone searches by students who suspected him of being gay. Friends of the deceased assert they possess documented evidence, including messages and testimonies recorded by Fubara before his death, which reportedly identify specific individuals involved in the harassment.
The situation escalated when Fubara was hospitalized after developing severe medical complications, including repeated seizure episodes. He was eventually admitted into intensive care, where he passed away. While the university has reportedly commenced internal investigations, the reports have revived long-standing concerns regarding the safety and hostel environment within the institution.
“We have messages and personal accounts he recorded detailing these experiences,” a close associate of the deceased stated. Previous incidents at the university have seen students disciplined for harassment, but the severity of this case has led to calls for external law enforcement involvement. The university management is yet to release a formal public statement regarding the findings of their preliminary probe as of Thursday afternoon.
