Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice of Nigeria, Mr. Abubakar Malami (Senior Advocate of Nigeria), has publicly confirmed that he has been invited by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, stating that he is fully prepared to honour the agency’s request.

The former minister disclosed this through a statement he posted on his verified Facebook account on Friday. According to him, the step is consistent with his personal belief in transparency and responsible governance. Okay News reports.

In his brief announcement, Mr. Malami wrote, “This is to confirm that I have been invited by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. As a law-abiding and patriotic citizen, I hereby reaffirm my commitment to honour the invitation.” He stressed that his decision to address the matter openly is aligned with his long-standing desire to promote accountability in public office.

The ex-attorney general further explained that the principles of accountability and transparency have been central to his public service approach. He added that he would provide additional updates as more developments unfold. He stated, “I understand the spirit of accountability and transparency in public service — principles that I both advocate and champion.”

Mr. Malami served as Nigeria’s chief law officer from the year 2015 to the year 2023 under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. During this period, he was involved in major legal and policy issues, including international arbitration disputes, anti-corruption initiatives, and significant asset recovery efforts that drew global attention.

His time in office also came with intense public scrutiny, especially on matters related to asset declarations, contract approvals, and the handling of recovered funds. Although the concerns attracted national debate, Mr. Malami consistently rejected the allegations.

As of the time of this report, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has not released further details regarding the specific nature or scope of the invitation extended to the former minister.
