Manchester United have dismissed head coach Ruben Amorim, bringing an end to his 14-month spell at the club following a run of underwhelming results in the English top flight.
Okay News reports that the decision was taken after Sunday’s 1–1 draw away to Leeds United, a result that left United sitting sixth in the Premier League table.
The club confirmed the development in an official statement released on Monday, acknowledging that the choice to change leadership was not taken lightly.
“Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United,” the statement said.
“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.”
Amorim’s tenure saw United record 24 victories in 63 matches across all competitions, a return that ranks among the lowest win ratios by a permanent manager in the club’s history.
Despite the struggles, the club expressed appreciation for the Portuguese coach’s efforts during his time at Old Trafford.
“The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future,” the statement added.
In the interim, former midfielder and current Under-18 coach Darren Fletcher has been appointed to take temporary charge of the first team as the search for a new head coach begins.
“Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday,” the club confirmed.
Manchester United are expected to move quickly in identifying a long-term replacement as they aim to salvage their league campaign and secure the highest possible finish before the end of the season.
