Meet the New NAHCON Chairman: Jalal Ahmad Arabi

Jalal Ahmad Arabi was born in 1962 in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria. He is a native of Gombe State.

Education

Arabi attended Islamiyya Primary School, Jos Plateau State, from 1967 to 1973. He then proceeded to Government Secondary School Gombe, where he obtained his West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASC) in 1978.

Arabi went on to study Law at the University of Jos, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree in 1983.

He then proceeded to the Council of Legal Education, Lagos, where he obtained his Barrister-at-Law (BL) qualification in 1984.

Career

Arabi began his working career in July 1985 at the Ministry of Justice, Bauchi, Bauchi State. He held various positions in the Ministry, including State Counsel, Senior State Counsel, and Secretary/Legal Adviser and Head of Administration at Manto Processing Ltd, Bauchi.

In 1990, Arabi joined the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Nigeria) and Water Resources as Legal Officer and Personal Assistant to the Honorable Minster. He subsequently held various positions in the Federal Government, including:

  • Legal Adviser to Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF)
  • Assistant Director (Rail), Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure
  • Deputy Director (Parastatals/Special Services), Ministry of Defence
  • State House Counsel

On 17th October 2023, Arabi was appointed Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON).

Arabi has also served on various committees and panels, including:

  • Inter-Agency Committee for the Final Relocation and Settlement of Public Officers in Abuja
  • Inter-Ministerial Committee on the Drafting of Terms of Reference and Procedures for the Ad-hoc Constitutional Bodies (Transition Committee, Constitutional Conference Committee and so forth)
  • Inter-Agency Committee on the Reorganization and Repositioning of the Trade Unions and Affiliate Associations
  • Panel on Review of Judiciary and Police
  • Nigerian Legal Team on Bakassi
  • Sub-Committee on International Criminal Court (ICC)
  • Nigerian Delegation to the UN Human Rights Committee, Geneva
  • Ministerial Committee on Re-appraisal of the Nigerian Railway and Repositioning of the Rail Transport Project
  • Ministerial Committee on the Reorganization of the Military Pension Board
  • Ministerial Committee on the Re-assessment and Re-evaluation of Bilateral Military Assistance to Defense Personnel
  • Inter-Agency Panel on the Clash between Nigeria Air Force and Nigerian Police Personnel
  • Ministry of Defense Anti-Corruption Unit
  • Presidential Committee on Financial Action Task Force
  • Presidential Committee on Inter-Professional Relationship in the Health Sector
