ARLINGTON, United States — Argentina captain Lionel Messi has become the highest goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history after scoring twice in his country’s 2-0 victory over Austria at the 2026 World Cup.
The 38-year-old forward surpassed former Germany striker Miroslav Klose’s long-standing record of 16 World Cup goals. Messi had equalled the mark with a hat-trick against Algeria in Argentina’s opening match before moving ahead with two more goals against Austria.
Messi opened the scoring in the 39th minute with a left-footed finish before adding a second goal in stoppage time after converting a rebound from a Julian Alvarez effort. The brace takes his World Cup tally to 18 goals and five goals in the ongoing tournament.
Okay News reports that Messi initially missed a penalty inside the opening 10 minutes but recovered to deliver another record-breaking performance as Argentina secured qualification for the Round of 32.
The Inter Miami star is featuring in his sixth World Cup, matching the record for the most tournament appearances by a player. He also became only the third footballer to score in six consecutive World Cup matches.
Argentina, the defending champions, have now won their opening two matches and are guaranteed a place in the knockout stage. They will face Jordan in their final Group J fixture.
Messi’s achievement has further strengthened his position among football’s all-time greats, while France forward Kylian Mbappé, who has 14 World Cup goals, remains the closest active player to the Argentine’s new record.
With at least one more group-stage match remaining and Argentina progressing to the knockout rounds, Messi now has additional opportunities to extend his lead as the competition continues.
