Meta, the parent company of social media giants Facebook and Instagram, has announced that it is actively investigating widespread outages affecting its platforms globally.

Users around the world reported being locked out of their accounts, prompting Meta to address the issue.

“We’re aware people are having trouble accessing our services. We are working on this now,” stated Meta spokesman Andy Stone in a post on X, acknowledging the disruptions.

According to reports, the outage impacted a significant number of users, with Facebook and Instagram experiencing peak outage reports of around 500,000 and 70,000, respectively, at 10:30 am US East Coast time (1530 GMT).

Threads, Meta’s rival to Twitter, also faced reports of outages, although WhatsApp, Meta’s messaging service, appeared to be unaffected.

Facebook’s status page, primarily intended for advertisers, confirmed the disruptions, describing them as “major disruptions” and assuring users that engineering teams are actively working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

Users attempting to access Facebook encountered difficulties logging in, despite entering the correct password.

Similarly, mobile users on Instagram reported that their feeds were not refreshing, indicating a widespread technical issue affecting content delivery.

Facebook, boasting three billion active monthly users, holds the title of the world’s largest social media platform.

Meanwhile, Instagram, with approximately 1.35 billion users according to the latest data, stands as one of the most popular photo-sharing platforms globally.
