MAIDUGURI, Nigeria — Security forces operating in the northeastern region of Nigeria have successfully repelled multiple insurgent attempts, resulting in the deaths of numerous fighters belonging to the Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) groups. The Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), which is the unified military command established to restore peace in the region, conducted these defensive and offensive maneuvers between Tuesday, March 31, and Saturday, April 4, 2026.
According to a formal statement released on Sunday, April 5, 2026, at approximately 10:00 AM West African Time (GMT+1), Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, the Media Information Officer for the military headquarters, confirmed that the operations targeted the logistics and movement of the insurgents. This development is significant as it highlights the ongoing efforts of the federal government of Nigeria to secure the Lake Chad Basin and surrounding states from long-standing extremist threats.
In one specific engagement near the town of Geidam in Yobe State, troops collaborated with the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), a local volunteer security group that assists the military. Based on intelligence reports, the combined force intercepted suppliers providing food and electronics to the insurgents. During the confrontation, three terrorists were killed, and their vehicle was seized. Okay News reports that the military also neutralized two insurgents along the Konduga to Kawuri road in Borno State after an ambush triggered an accidental explosion of the insurgents’ own explosive devices.
The security operations extended beyond Borno State into neighboring Adamawa State. In the Mubi North Local Government Area, which is a secondary administrative division, troops and local hunters arrested three suspects. One individual reportedly admitted to scouting military positions for future attacks. Additionally, three other suppliers were detained at the Mainok market, where livestock and cash totaling over ₦2 million (about $1,350) were recovered.
The military command stated that these actions have effectively weakened the supply chains that allow these groups to operate. For international observers, these events reflect a period of high alert as the military attempts to deny the insurgents freedom of movement across the borders of Nigeria, Cameroon, and Chad. All suspects remain in custody for further interrogation.
