It was tears and curses when a seven-month-old baby was found dumped in a heap of rubbish beside Lanre bus stop in the Igando area of Lagos State.

The baby which was said to be suffering from an unknown ailment with a very big head, was discovered early yesterday morning by a passer-by who heard the cries of the poor baby and raised the alarm. Residents of the area quickly rushed to the scene to behold the sorry sight, with many women breaking into tears.

The residents reported their finding at the Igando Police Station, and some female officers were dispatched to pick up the baby from the dump site.

The resident who discovered the baby, Segun Adesoye, said that he was on his way to work early that morning when he heard its cries and on taking a closer look, realised that it was a live baby.

Another eyewitness who identified herself as Iya Oyo, said the sight was too pathetic and nobody could move close to the baby as they were all in shock at the act of a mother who, after carrying a baby for nine months in her womb, could have the heart to throw it away, probably because it was sick.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the find and said the baby had been handed over to an orphanage.

“The baby was taken to Heart of Gold Orphanage in Surulere. It is sad. A very responsible and caring parent would not have acted that way. We implore his mother to show up at any nearest police station or go to the orphanage.”
