A moving train crushed a tricycle operator and a passenger to death on Wednesday near the Phototech area of Abattoir Junction in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, north-central Nigeria.

The train was reportedly travelling from Bukuru to the Jos city centre when the collision occurred. Two other passengers sustained severe injuries in the incident.

An eyewitness, Muhammad Ibrahim, said the crash happened around 11 a.m. when the tricycle attempted to cross the tracks as the train approached. He explained that the train struck the tricycle instantly, killing the rider and one passenger on the spot, while two women were injured.

Confirming the incident, spokesperson of the Jos Railway Station, Adam Abdullahi, said the tricycle operator ignored safety warnings at the railway crossing.

Abdullahi stated that a railway staff member had signaled the rider to stop, but he refused and tried to cross the tracks before the train passed. “Our official stopped him, but he refused to stop. The train’s speed eventually caught the tricycle, causing the accident,” he said.

Local authorities have urged road users to obey railway crossing rules to prevent similar accidents.
