MTN Nigeria Suspends Its Airtime and Data Credit Advance Service

Lagos, Nigeria – MTN Nigeria Communications PLC has temporarily suspended its popular airtime and data credit advance service, known as “Xtratime.” The company announced the suspension is necessary to comply with new government regulations for digital lending.

The decision is a direct result of the “Digital, Electronic, Online or Non-Traditional Consumer Lending Regulations, 2025,” which introduced a new compliance and licensing framework. According to Okay News, this regulatory change requires companies offering digital credit services to adapt their processes to meet the updated standards.

MTN has assured its customers that while the Xtratime service is paused, they can still purchase airtime and data through alternative digital channels. The telecommunications giant stated that it does not expect the temporary suspension to have a material impact on its overall revenue mix.

The company is closely monitoring customer behavior and usage trends following this change. MTN Nigeria announced it will provide a more detailed update on any quantified financial impact in its upcoming first-quarter results for 2026.
