The leadership of the National Assembly, in a bid to prevent a nationwide strike scheduled to begin on Monday, June 3, 2024 is currently holding emergency talks with the leadership of the Organised Labour in Abuja.

The meeting, which includes Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and labour leaders Joe Ajaero and Festus Osifo, aims to resolve the impasse over a new national minimum wage and the recent hike in electricity tariffs.

The National Assembly expressed concern that the impending industrial action would have severe repercussions on the populace and economy.

The labour unions are demanding a new minimum wage of ₦497,000, citing the current wage of ₦30,000 is no longer sufficient for the average Nigerian worker. They also expressed frustration that not all governors are paying the current wage award, which expired in April 2024.

The Federal Government had offered ₦60,000, which was rejected by Labour. The strike is set to begin on Monday if an agreement is not reached.

The meeting is a last-ditch effort to avert the strike and find a resolution to the ongoing dispute.
