Nigerian lawmaker Senator Ned Nwoko, who represents Delta North in the National Assembly, has vowed to pursue lawful and decisive action against individuals behind what he describes as a coordinated campaign of online harassment and criminal defamation.

Okay News reports that the senator’s position was outlined in a statement issued on Thursday by his Communications Team.

The statement raised concerns about what it called a “renewed pattern of online harassment, cyber stalking and coordinated defamatory videos and publications targeted at Sen. Ned Nwoko.”

It alleged that those behind the attacks were attempting to create “a false narrative of persecution in order to serve ulterior motives.”

According to the team, Nwoko remains focused on his legislative responsibilities and development projects, and holds no interest in engaging with “online distractions or fabricated drama.”

Still, it stressed that the lawmaker would not ignore serious allegations circulated across social platforms.

The statement cited Nwoko’s position that “when grave allegations are made, they must be addressed in accordance with the law, not through misinformation or emotional manipulation.”

Cautioning the public about the societal impact of misinformation, the team added, “We must caution the public that the growing culture of supporting deviant conduct, shielding wrongdoers and attempting to weaponise public sympathy is damaging to our national values… Today, falsehood may be deployed against one individual; tomorrow, it may be directed at anyone.”

To address the situation, the senator has instructed his lawyers to file formal petitions with the Inspector General of Police, the Director-General of the Department of State Services, and the Commissioner of Police (Cyber Crime Unit), calling for a full investigation and prosecution of those responsible for the alleged cyber offences.

“The relevant digital footprints will be traced and lawful action will be pursued,” the team said.

The statement also urged the governments of the United States and the United Kingdom to take note of what it described as attempts by certain individuals to manipulate public sympathy for personal gain, particularly through the creation of “artificial drama around a stable family structure.”

It added, “If any frivolous grounds are being put forward to seek asylum, such manoeuvres should be discountenanced. Authorities are encouraged to rely on verified facts and legal processes rather than sensationalised narratives designed to mislead.”

The public was encouraged to disregard circulating claims and allow authorised security agencies to carry out their investigations.

According to the statement, “The senator remains focused on his work and continues to uphold dignity, responsibility and due process.”
