Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has approved the appointment of Ms Sherifat Adegbenro as acting Chief Executive Officer of Eko Electricity Distribution PLC, one of the private companies that distributes power in Lagos and parts of Ogun State, following a fresh round of leadership changes at the utility.

Okay News reports that the regulator announced its decision in a public notice on its official X social media handle, saying the move complies with the Code of Corporate Governance for the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry and is intended to ensure leadership continuity while the company searches for a substantive chief executive officer.

The commission said Ms Adegbenro will immediately take over as acting CEO of Eko Electricity Distribution Company, commonly known as Eko DisCo, and that her appointment remains in place until the board names a permanent chief executive, a step seen as important for regulatory stability in Nigeria’s privatised power market.

Her elevation comes just months after Eko DisCo named Wola Joseph Condotti as interim CEO in January 2026, a change that followed the completion of a majority stake acquisition in the company by TransGrid Enerco Limited, a Nigerian investment consortium.

That January appointment itself came less than two weeks after TransGrid Enerco finalised its purchase of a 60 per cent controlling stake in Eko Electricity Distribution Company in a deal valued at about 360 billion naira, roughly 240 million dollars at an assumed rate of 1,500 naira to one dollar, marking one of the largest private takeovers in Nigeria’s power distribution sector since the 2013 privatisation of the national electricity industry.

Before the TransGrid transaction, Eko DisCo had also undergone a series of leadership shifts, including the confirmation of Rekhiat Momoh as managing director and CEO in November 2025 after she had served in an acting capacity from March 2024, following the redeployment of former CEO Tinuade Sanda back to West Power and Gas, the original core investor in the company.

The new acting appointment underscores ongoing efforts by regulators and investors to stabilise governance at Eko Electricity Distribution Company, which serves a major commercial hub and is seen as a bellwether for Nigeria’s wider power sector reforms, where reliable leadership is critical for improving service, attracting capital and restoring customer confidence.
