President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, has emerged as the new president of the West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone B.

Gusau was elected during an online meeting held by executive members of the zone on Monday, following the resignation of his predecessor, Edwin Simeon-Okraku of Ghana, in April. Simeon-Okraku stepped down from the position to assume a new role as second vice-president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Prior to his election, Gusau served as WAFU B’s first vice president.

His election marks a historic milestone, as he becomes the fourth Nigerian to lead the sub-regional body, following in the footsteps of Jonathan Ogufere, Abdulmumini Aminu, and Amos Adamu.

WAFU serves as the regional football body for West Africa. However, in 2011, the Confederation of African Football restructured the body into two zones for administrative efficiency.

Zone A includes: Cape Verde, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Senegal, and Sierra Leone.

Zone B is made up of: Nigeria, Benin Republic, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Niger, and Togo.

Gusau, who was elected NFF president in 2022, will now lead WAFU Zone B.
