The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is set to officially unveil Eric Chelle as the new head coach of the Super Eagles, following his appointment on January 7, 2025.

The 47-year-old Franco-Malian tactician will be introduced at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja, on Monday, alongside his coaching assistants. Chelle replaces Austin Eguavoen, who has been serving in an acting capacity since the departure of Finidi George.

Chelle’s selection was based on the recommendation of the NFF’s technical and development committee. The experienced coach previously led Mali to the quarter-finals of the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), earning a reputation for tactical ingenuity.

In a statement on Sunday, Ibrahim Gusau, NFF president, expressed optimism about Chelle’s appointment, describing him as a figure who embodies “fresh energy, new thinking, and a positive attitude.” Gusau emphasized that the coach’s primary mission is to reinvigorate the Super Eagles’ campaign in the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

“Eric Chelle will bring new thinking to the quest for Nigeria to salvage her chances of participating in the 2026 World Cup,” Gusau said.

He also called on Nigerians to rally behind the new coach and support his efforts to achieve success with the Super Eagles.

“We appreciate the fact that Nigerians are very passionate about the game of football, and that is the reason for the different tones of reactions following the appointment of Coach Chelle.

“However, the NFF hereby appeals to Nigerians to come together and support him, as we believe he has the qualities to achieve success with the Super Eagles,” he added.

The NFF president assured the public that the federation would provide Chelle with all necessary support to ensure a successful tenure.
