Militant groups in the Niger Delta have called on the Federal Government to drop its request to re-arrest the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nanmdi Kanu.

The Nigerian Government has asked the Federal High Court, Abuja, to revoke the bail granted to the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), for breach of the bail conditions.

It is also seeking an order of the court “directing the arrest and committing the 1st defendant to custody pending trial”.

Kanu spent over one year in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) for alleged crime against the state.

Justice Binta Nyeko of the Federal High Court had granted him bail with ”stringent” conditions.

In a statement jointly issued by Iyoyo, Ben and Anaeja, the militants warned the government of the dangers the country would face if Kanu was re-arrested.

The statement read in part: ”Federal Government cannot do it; but, if it tries to re-arrest Nnamdi Kanu, Leader of IPOB, it (FG) will regret the consequences. It will not believe what Nigeria will be thrown into,” the group said.

”Federal Government has shown, through its moves to re-arrest Nnamdi Kanu, that it does not value lives of Nigerians. Government wants to use attempt to re-arrest the IPOB Leader to escalate the crisis in the country.

”If government is serious, it should go ahead to arrest and wait for the result. We will back IPOB and give the group support in any form , even without them expecting it.”
