Niger has banned all US citizens from obtaining visas and entering its territory, a direct response to America’s tightened immigration and diplomatic measures targeting several African nations. The announcement was confirmed by the Nigerien Press Agency (ANP) on Friday.
The move comes after the United States added Niger to its list of countries whose citizens no longer benefit from preferential entry, citing national security and migration concerns.
Officials in Niamey described the ban as a demonstration of national sovereignty and a proportional response to U.S. restrictions, emphasizing Niger’s commitment to protecting its interests while recalibrating its foreign policy.
The measure aligns with broader American policy shifts, including the recall of nearly 30 career diplomats from Africa, and is part of Niger’s wider effort to assert its stance amid evolving diplomatic and security realignments on the continent.
