General Abdourahamane Tchiani, head of the military junta in Niger Republic, has pledged that Niger, alongside Burkina Faso and Mali, will not return to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), citing grievances over the bloc’s actions and its impact on citizens’ welfare.

In an interview with RTN news channel in Niamey, General Tchiani reaffirmed the decision of the military regimes in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger to immediately withdraw from ECOWAS.

This move, they stated, was prompted by what they perceive as a lack of support and adverse effects on their countries’ economies and populace.

General Tchiani highlighted concerns over the disruption of essential supplies and financial constraints faced by member states within the bloc, leading to the collective decision to exit ECOWAS for the betterment of their citizens’ lives. He emphasized that the withdrawal was irreversible and underscored the determination of the Sahel nations not to rejoin the union.

Addressing potential repercussions on security, trade, and socio-economic activities, General Tchiani asserted that the world is interconnected beyond regional blocs, implying that the withdrawal from ECOWAS would not significantly impact these aspects. Additionally, he dismissed concerns about the release of a detained individual, Bazoum, stating it would not occur as it could endanger Nigeriens.
