LOKOJA, Nigeria – The federal government of Nigeria has announced its 2026 tertiary education funding interventions, allocating billions of naira directly to public universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across the country.
Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made the announcement on Thursday, August 20, 2026, during the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) North Central Zonal Town Hall Meeting held in Lokoja, the capital of Kogi State in central Nigeria.
Okay News reports that under the 2026 intervention cycle, TETFund has allocated approximately ₦2.53 billion (approximately $1.65 million) to each public university, ₦1.87 billion (approximately $1.22 million) to each public polytechnic, and ₦2.06 billion (approximately $1.34 million) to each public college of education.
The town hall meeting was attended by prominent regional leaders, including the Governor of Kogi State, Ahmed Usman Ododo, former Kogi State Governor Idris Wada, and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of TETFund, Aminu Bello Masari.
Idris noted that the financial allocations are designed to modernize public academic infrastructure, build lecture halls, upgrade laboratories and libraries, and finance academic research initiatives to stimulate economic, agricultural, and mineral development across Nigeria’s north-central region and the wider federation.
The minister added that TETFund’s capital interventions complement existing student support initiatives, including the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), describing sustainable investments in tertiary learning as vital pillars for economic productivity, youth empowerment, and national security.
