Abuja, Nigeria — The federal government of Nigeria has announced Friday, April 3, 2026, and Monday, April 6, 2026, as public holidays to mark this year’s Easter celebrations.
Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the announcement in a statement released on Wednesday. The dates correspond to Good Friday and Easter Monday, which are widely observed by Christians around the world to commemorate the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The minister extended congratulations to Christians both within Nigeria and in the diaspora, encouraging reflection on the spiritual meaning of the season. He said, “I congratulate all Christians in Nigeria and in the diaspora on the joyous occasion of Easter. I urge Nigerians to imbibe the virtues of selflessness, forgiveness, forbearance and love as exemplified by the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.”
Okay News reports that the government also used the opportunity to call for unity and peaceful coexistence among citizens during the holiday period. The minister emphasised that Easter highlights shared values that promote national harmony.
“Easter is a period that reminds us of the values of tolerance and community that keep us together as a nation. Nigerians should remain committed to these ideals for the progress of our country,” the minister said.
Tunji-Ojo further reiterated the administration’s commitment to policies designed to strengthen national development and economic growth. He noted that government decisions are intended to promote shared prosperity for all citizens.
“The goal of the government remains taking decisions that would bring about national rebirth, economic growth, and shared prosperity for all Nigerians,” he added.
He concluded by wishing Christians across Nigeria a peaceful and joyful Easter celebration, as millions prepare to observe the religious holiday.
